Innoskate Sioux Falls Rolls Out July 7-9
Levitt at the Falls, The Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, and USA Skateboarding will present a one-of-a-kind, free Innoskate festival for the Oglala Lakota Nation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, July 5, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, July 7–9.

Innoskate brings skateboarding and local communities together in a dynamic exploration of invention, creativity, fun, and freedom of expression. Discussions, demonstrations, and live concerts featuring the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra ensemble, national and local artists, professional and Olympic skateboarders, inventors, scientists, artists and local community leaders will engage audiences with the deep connections between art, music, skateboarding, creativity and innovation. Leading figures will discuss skateboarding technology, skateboarding in the Native American community at Pine Ridge, issues of diversity and inclusion, skateboarding’s role in promoting physical and mental health, and nurturing the growth of the skate community in Sioux Falls. The full Innoskate Sioux Falls schedule is available on the

Innoskate 2022 Festival Activities Include:
·       Skate demonstrations with pro skaters
·       Panel discussions with professional and Olympic skateboarders, inventors, scientists, artists and local community leaders
·       Interactive invention activities from the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center of Invention and Innovation
·       Mobile skatepark from the Sioux Falls Skatepark Association
·       Learn to skate clinics
·       Art Alley with interactive art activities and working artists
·       DTSF vendor skater village
·       Skateboard deck art show at Rehfeld’s Art & Framing
·       A Visual Sound skate film in concert with Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and filmmakers Chris Pastras and Jason Lee
·       Best trick contest
·       Free concert headlining performances from Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks OrchestraDessa, and Meet Me @ The Altar
The Innoskate Festival will begin at 7:00pm on Thursday, July 7th with an Innoskate 360 panel discussion followed by a performance by the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.  Festivities continue on Friday, July 8th with a 10:00am Jazz for Kids performance by the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.   Innoskate Festival activities will then be held from 11:00am – 7:00pm on Friday, July 8th and 11:00am – 7:00pm on Saturday, July 9th in the parking lot and streets adjacent to Levitt at the Falls.   The evenings will conclude with concerts at the Levitt.  Hip-hop artist Dessa will perform on Friday, July 8th at 7:00pm and punk-pop trio Meet Me @ The Altar will perform on Saturday, July 9th at 7:00pm at the Levitt.

The Sioux Falls Innoskate Festival will be the 8
th Innoskate Festival held in the world.  The first was held in Washington D.C. in 2013 and the most recent was held in London in 2019.
Innoskate Sioux Falls is being sponsored by the Wokini Initiative of South Dakota State University, with additional support provided by the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council (an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities), Ray & Vera Conniff Foundation, Tess Kirby, Avera Health, First PREMIER Bank | PREMIER Bankcard, Schulte Subaru, David H. Horowitz Fund, Jones Building, Sioux Falls Jazz & Blues Society, Sisson Printing, P & M Steel and the South Dakota Arts Council.

Additional local planning support is being provided by the Sioux Falls Skatepark Association, Downtown Sioux Falls, Rehfeld’s Art & Framing, Ground Control, Rock the Rez, and the Sioux Falls Arts Council.

About Innoskate
Established in 2013 as a joint collaboration between USA Skateboarding and the Lemelson Center, Innoskate celebrates skateboarding, invention, creativity and freedom of expression. Key elements of the Innoskate program include large public festivals, hands-on STEAM-based invention activities, public programs and demonstrations, research and documentation of skate history and acquisition of skate objects for the Smithsonian national collections. Innoskate shares its findings and engages broad publics through innovative educational initiatives, publications and digital outlets. Together, these joint activities spark inventive and creative thinking in young people while fostering collaborations between the skate community, scholars, artists, museum professionals, scientists and community leaders.

About the Lemelson Center
The Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center engages, educates and empowers the public to participate in technological, economic and social change. The center undertakes historical research, develops educational initiatives, creates exhibitions and hosts public programming to advance new perspectives on invention and innovation and to foster interactions between the public and inventors. The Lemelson Hall of Invention and Innovation, featuring the Draper Spark!Lab, “Places of Invention” and “Inventive Minds,” is a signature part of the National Museum of American History’s 45,000-square-foot space centered on the theme of innovation.

About USA Skateboarding
As the recognized governing body for skateboarding in the United States, USA Skateboarding (USAS) is responsible for the selection, training and fielding of national teams that compete in the Olympic Games, Pan American Games and other sanctioned team events. USAS is also responsible for the development of youth skateboarding initiatives. About Levitt at the Falls
Levitt at the Falls is part of a national network of outdoor Levitt music venues and concert sites dedicated to strengthening the social fabric of communities. Presenting a broad array of music genres and cultural programming, Levitt venues bring together families, friends and neighbors of all ages and backgrounds.
