House Shopping by District

Jun 26, 2021 ● By Dawn Van Nieuwenhuyzen, Plains Commerce Bank Senior Mortgage Banker

When it comes to house shopping, we often hear location, location, location. I always tell my customers that the only thing you can’t change about your home is where it’s located. If you have your sights set on a certain location, here a few things to keep in mind as you shop.

  1. Set your budget: If a house in your dream district seems beyond your budget, consider your finances. It is important to consider all your monthly expenses when figuring out what you are able to spend on a house. For example, are you buying and selling a home? Can we use the profits from the sale of your current home to pay off other debts and free up more room for a higher payment in your monthly budget? When you find your perfect home, I want to make sure you can stay there. I will work with you to determine what best fits your budget and your dreams.

  2. Consider the future: Think about where you want your home to be and how it will suit your family’s needs in the long run. If your child is showing interest in an activity, think about the best school district to nurture those interests. The Sioux Falls area is blessed with so many opportunities for kids that you can take advantage of. Research the resources available for your child in the different school districts and find the place that is the best fit for them. Also, consider factors such as commutes to work, school and extracurriculars, and be honest with yourself about how much traveling you are willing to fit into your day.

  3. Know your district: The Sioux Falls area is growing quickly, and it can be confusing figuring out where each district is divided. We have so many knowledgeable Realtors in the area who can help you find a house in your ideal area! If you are set on a certain school district, call that district to verify where their boundaries are.
