Get Involved This Summer with FIRST® LEGO® League

Fuel your student’s imagination and creativity this summer by signing them up for a FIRST LEGO League Camp. FIRST LEGO League brings students together with peers to overcome challenges and find a deeper interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).

A Brief History of South Dakota’s First Lego League

First LEGO League, a national organization, first appeared in South Dakota in 2008. Dr. Alan Swanson, a graduate of MIT, began the group to address the need for a program in South Dakota that emphasized the STEM disciplines.

FIRST LEGO League was an immediate success. The number of teams continued to grow each year, and the program quickly spread across the state. In 2015, EmBe became FIRST’s partner organization. Through tournaments and championships, EmBe has helped students join with their peers to overcome challenges and learn more about STEM.

Here’s How to Get Involved

1.    Sign up for a camp

The best way to get involved is to sign up! We offer camps for kids ages 6-14. Our camps are designed to fit a multitude of experience levels, from beginner to advanced.

Here are some of the camps we offer:

·         Mini Robotics Camp

·         FLL Beginner Camps

·         FLL Advanced Camps

·         FLL Junior Camp

·         Virtual Scratch Programming Camp

“Through our camps, students are able to continue to build on their skills each year from the project to presenting and overall teamwork skills,” Jennifer Hoesing, Chief Development Officer, said.

2.    Join a team and compete

After completing a camp, you can continue working with FLL by joining a team. With a team of up to 10 members, you can compete throughout South Dakota to qualify for the State Championship, held the first weekend of February on the Augustana University campus.

Each tournament has three parts: The Robot Game, the Innovation Project Presentation and the Core Values Challenge.

“What we enjoy most about FIRST Lego League is the endless adventure this gives our participants,” Hoesing said. “Lego League is truly building your own path. A child can choose to do as much or little as they wish.”
