7 Tips for Safe Winter Fun!
By: Alexa Giebink, Great Bear Ski Valley When the snow falls and the kids head outside for some winter fun, here are a few tips to keep them safe and warm! 1. Layers – Wear layers to guard against the cold. A light outer layer, or shell, is great to protect against wind and water, while keeping heat in. Layer over a warm sweatshirt and long sleeve shirt. 2. Wool Socks – Invest in a pair of good wool socks that will wick moisture away while keeping your feet warm. Multiple layers of socks can restrict blood flow and make you sweat, which gets trapped and chill your feet. 3. Sunscreen – Don’t forget to apply sunscreen, even in the winter! The sun reflects off the white snow and can burn exposed skin. 4. Safety Gear – When enjoying outdoor recreation in the winter like skiing, snowboarding or hockey, make sure you have properly fitting safety gear, including a helmet, wrist guards and pads. 5. Check the Weather – Be cautious when temps drop below zero. Dress warm for low wind chills. 6. Take Breaks – Warm up inside with a hot cocoa break when playing in cold weather. 7. Have Fun – And don’t forget to have fun! Get outside, exercise and enjoy the fresh air this winter.
