Grilled Strawberry Shortcake

Jun 22, 2014 03:34PM ● By Hood Magazine

  • 1 angel food cake, prepared and sliced into 2” thick pieces
  • 1 pint strawberries, chopped
  • 1 orange, juiced and zested
  • 1 pint heavy (whipping) cream
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar, or to taste

To make the whipped cream:  mix together the cream and sugar.  Whip until stiff peaks form. To make the strawberry sauce:  put the strawberries, orange juice, and orange zest into a foil grilling pouch.  Grill about 5-10 minutes, or until the strawberries are warm and bursting. While the strawberries are grilling, grill your angel food cake slices.  Place on the grill, cut side down, until grill marks form (about 30 seconds).  Flip and grill another 30 seconds, or until grill marks form. To assemble:  Layer the strawberries and whipped cream on top of the grilled angel food cake slices.  Enjoy!

For a different twist, try using other berries.  Blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are all delicious!

Try infusing your whipped cream with different flavors!  Add in coconut, vanilla beans, instant espresso powder…the possibilities are endless!
