If you'd like to make your own version of these experiments the instructions are below.
Elephant ToothpasteIn any empty bottle (water, pop, juice, milk - anything will work!) add 1/2 C of 6% Hydrogen Peroxide. You can use 8% of more (available on Amazon), or you can use Salon Care Professional Stabilized Formula 20 Volume Clear Developer from Sally Beauty Supply. Note 3% Hydrogen Peroxide you buy from the drug store will NOT work. Add a squirt a dish soap, and a drop or two of any color food coloring.
In a separate bowl mix 1 tsp. of dry yeast and 2 Tbsp. of warm water.
Pour the yeast mixture in your bottle and be prepared to be amazed!
Why does this happen? When you mix yeast with hydrogen peroxide it breaks it down at a very fast rate. The dish soap catches the oxygen that is being released resulting in a whole lot of exploding bubbles!
Take this experiment further by playing around a little. Add a little extra soap. Change up the temperature of the solution by making it slightly warmer or cooler. Record your results to see what works the best!
Apple VolcanoesCore an apple and add in a spoonful of Baking Soda. Let your little scientist pour some vinegar into the apple and watch it erupt!
Try putting in baking soda first in one apple and vinegar first in the other. Have your child guess which one will have the best results!
